INTRODUCTION: THE ZOOM AND THE EGO (How to explain water to a fish)
We are going to attempt to explain, to the extent of our limited human possibilities, that mysterious fourth dimension we call Time. And to do so, we are going to apply a sort of mental “zoom” in two opposite directions: a reverse zoom (towards the static and eternal) and a forward zoom (towards entropy and chaos).
You will read some metaphors below, because it is very difficult to explain to a fish what water is without taking it out of the fishbowl. But before entering into hard physics, I propose some images in this brief introduction to warm up the engine:
Do you remember that famous series from a few years ago called “Desperate Housewives”? Well, let's apply the zoom I mentioned. If we look closely, each role, each actress, represented a separate archetype: the romantic, the ambitious one, the self-sacrificing mother, the naive one, the rogue or mischievous one, the manipulator… and a few others. But if we apply this "ARK Zoom", if we pull back far enough, we would see that we have to unite them all. And all of them together, integrated, would cease to be loose characters to form ONE COMPLETE WOMAN.
I will attempt a metaphor now that is more personal, more self-referential and bleeding.
When I started this project we call ARK, the main motivation was totally altruistic, philanthropic. It was born from a structural humility (not a pose, not a facade, but REAL; that humility provided by being aware that we know nothing about anything). And, suddenly, I saw myself “fighting against my ego.” I surprised myself saying: —"What you want, you disgusting narcissistic Gemini, is to show how smart you are. You’re like: 'Look, look, world! Look how smart I am and what I have created!'".
That was my Ego. That was my “social self”, my Yesod, which is IMPOSSIBLE to deactivate. And not only is it impossible, but it is not recommended, because what must be done is to INTEGRATE IT.
Upon applying the zoom I saw both clearly: I saw my Ego/Yesod desperately seeking “recognition” and I saw my Tiferet or “higher self” (the one that is much closer to my Soul and my Purpose) that was only happy if it managed, humbly, to contribute something, to help with something… and that zoom tells me today that both are in me and both are legitimate. My only job is to “realize it” to ensure that it is Tiferet, and not Yesod, who is at the helm of the ship.
Now, imagine that we apply that same zoom, inversely and directly, to the planet where we live, as if you were playing with Google Maps.
If we keep MOVING AWAY INFINITELY (Zoom Out), at first we see the streets, the people, the activity, the traffic; but as we move away towards the stratosphere, we stop seeing the detail and everything passes, little by little, to being more static. Everything begins to be more “ordered” and in a strange “stillness”, as if Time ceased to exist and only geography remained.
And when applying it directly (Zoom In), it would be the reverse: everything would begin to take on speed and movement. If the zoom could reach infinitesimal and quantum magnitudes, at an atomic and subatomic level, we would see that the physical reality that seems solid to us (us, a table, an elephant) is actually a frenetic dance, active, unpredictable, and entropic.
How do you explain water to a fish? It simply cannot be done. We are “inside that Matrix” and the most we can aspire to, I intuit, is that “realization”.
That is why I apply the same zoom to my self-referential metaphor, to that Ego vs. Soul in only apparent struggle. To that ego seeking “recognition” and that soul seeking “purpose”, understanding that they are two sides of the same coin. And that “realization” (with the zoom) serves not to fight against anything, but to try to ensure that it is the soul and not the ego holding the steering wheel… while I try (like you, friend reader, sister) to integrate my own “shadow” in Jungian terms.
Because notice how curious: my soul would be much more pleased chatting with those who discussed my hypotheses, than with those who dogmatized them.
Let's begin.
BLOQUE 0: THE THRESHOLD (CONTEXTUALIZATION)
0.1. THE TACTICAL LINK: WHEN BREAKING THE CLOCK ISN'T ENOUGH
Just a few weeks ago, in the report titled "The Rebellion Against Kronos" [https://universoark.com/en/the-rebellion-against-kronos], we opened a door that for many had remained sealed throughout their entire adult life. In that dossier, we performed a historical autopsy on one of the greatest scams committed against the human psyche: the standardization of time.
We took you by the hand to that smoke-filled room in Washington D.C., on October 13, 1884. There, you witnessed how a group of diplomats, pressured by the industrial necessity of the railroad and the telegraph, decided to hijack the natural fluidity of day and night to enclose it in a mechanical box called GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).
We discovered together that your anxiety on Sunday afternoon, that pressure in your chest upon seeing 18:00 on the clock, was not a flaw in your character, but the result of a Pavlovian conditioning designed 140 years ago so that you would be an efficient cog in the machinery of production. We identified the POLITICAL ENEMY. We put names and faces to the architects of your time cage. And, in doing so, we felt the relief of someone who discovers that the prison has paper bars.
But today... today we have to talk about something much darker.
Because if you stay only with that part of the history, you run the risk of falling into an even more dangerous trap: the false sense of freedom.
Imagine for a moment that you decide to execute the "Rebellion Against Kronos" to its ultimate consequences. Imagine that you quit your corporate job, sell your properties, throw your smartphone into the sea, and move to a desert island in the South Pacific. No bosses. No train schedules. No Outlook notifications. No calendar.
In an act of symbolic liberation, you take your wristwatch and smash it against a rock. The gears fly through the air. Social time, political time, the time of 1884, has ceased to exist for you. You are, theoretically, a human being free from the tyranny of the clock.
And yet... something terrible happens.
You sit on the sand to watch the horizon and, although no one demands anything of you, you notice that the sun goes down. You notice that the day ends without you giving permission. The moons pass. And one morning, looking at your hands under the raw light of the tropics, you see a spot on your skin that wasn't there before. You notice that your joints, which used to move like oil, now have a slight creak of rust. You notice that your energy, previously inexhaustible, now asks you for a truce after fishing.
There, in the absolute silence of your paradise without clocks, you realize the terrifying truth: you have killed the clock, but time continues to devour you.
Here is where we must draw the red line that separates this report from the previous one.
· In KRONOS, we fought against a SOCIAL FICTION. We fought against an agreement between Victorian gentlemen who decided that 9:00 a.m. was the time to produce. That enemy was external, bureaucratic, and, ultimately, optional. You could get out of the system.
· In this report, THE MIRAGE OF KRONOS, we face a STRUCTURAL REALITY. We face the very fabric of the universe. Here the enemy is not a politician in a top hat; here the enemy is Thermodynamics.
The problem with that desert island is not that you lack time management. The problem is that you are trapped in a universe that has an "arrow" stuck in its heart. You are trapped in a system that penalizes order and rewards chaos.
If in the previous post we told you that time is money (a lie of capitalism), in this post we are going to tell you that time is ENTROPY (a truth of physics).
And this distinction is vital. Because the majority of personal development gurus sell you the idea that if you "organize" your life, you will dominate time. They are lying to you.
You can organize your agenda to perfection, you can optimize every second, you can escape to the highest mountain... but your cells continue obeying a blind, deaf, and dumb law that dictates that everything that is ordered must, inevitably, become disordered.
We are not here today to talk about how to gain hours in the day. We are here to ask ourselves what the hell an "hour" is.
Is it something real? Or is it, as the brightest minds in modern physics suggest, a cognitive hallucination? Is it possible that, in reality, on that desert island, nothing is happening and it is your brain that is creating the movie of your own aging?
Get ready. In the previous report, we dismantled the office. Today we are going to dismantle Reality. Because to stop suffering for the future, first you have to understand, with the coldness of a forensic examiner, that the future, as they have told it to you, physically does not exist.
0.2. THE AUTHORITY: IT'S NOT A CONSPIRACY, IT'S CERN
Before launching ourselves into the void, I need you to understand who is piloting the ship on this journey.
In ARK we have a golden rule: The border between genius and madness is rigor.
It is very easy to fall into the internet rabbit hole, where any YouTuber with a microphone sells you that time is an alien conspiracy or a spiritual hologram. Those discourses are seductive, yes, but they are cheap sugar. They give you a momentary high of "forbidden knowledge" and then leave you empty, without real tools to defend yourself at a dinner with skeptical in-laws.
That is why, to dismantle the physical reality of time, we have not turned to a New Age guru nor to a mystery channel of dubious reputation. We have turned to the INSTITUTION.
The man who is going to lend us his eyes and his brain today is named José Manuel Nieves.
If you don't know him, you should. Nieves is not a conspiracy theorist. He is a journalist through and through who has spent more than thirty years getting his hands stained with ink in the newsroom of the newspaper ABC, one of the oldest and most conservative newspapers in Spain. He has been the founder and head of its Science and Technology section. He has covered shuttle launches at Cape Canaveral, he has interviewed Nobel laureates, and he has walked the halls of CERN in Geneva while they searched for the Higgs Boson.
Why is this important?
Because when Nieves says that "time does not exist", he doesn't say it because he read it in an obscure forum. He says it because he has read the academic papers of the National Research Council of Italy. He says it because he has studied the equations of Carlo Rovelli and Julian Barbour. He says it because he translates the hermetic language of Quantum Physics and General Relativity into the language of ordinary people, without losing a drop of truth along the way.
Nieves is a "translator of gods". He has the unique ability to take a mathematical concept that would give a doctoral student a nosebleed and turn it into a metaphor as clear as a loaf of bread or a coffee cup breaking.
Today, we are going to use his pedagogy as a weapon. We are going to take his forensic explanations about the structure of the universe and we are going to connect them with the operational philosophy of ARK.
We do not ask you to have faith. We ask you to have attention. Because what this man explains is not an opinion; it is the technical description of the cage you live in. And science, true science, when taken to the limit, is much stranger and more liberating than any fantasy.
Get ready. The veteran journalist is about to tell you that your watch is lying.
BLOCK I: THE BLOCK UNIVERSE (DEATH OF "NOW")
1.1. INTUITION VS. REALITY: THE RIVER CATASTROPHE
If you close your eyes right now, your intuition tells you a very convincing story. It tells you that you are riding on a raft sailing down a mighty river. Behind you, in the wake of foam, lies the Past: a territory that no longer exists, that has vanished into nothingness. Before you, in the mist, is the Future: a void that has not yet been created. And you, small and fragile, are standing on the only real plank of wood: the Present.
This narrative is poetic. It is comforting. It is the basis of our entire civilization, of our religions, and of our anxiety.
The problem is that, according to the fundamental physics that governs the cosmos, it is a lie.
A little over a century ago, Albert Einstein committed the greatest act of intellectual vandalism in history: he smashed that universal clock. When he formulated Relativity, he not only said that time could stretch or shrink; he said something much more radical. He said that space and time are not two separate things, but a single continuous fabric of four dimensions.
For modern physics, your life is not a movie that is projected frame by frame until the reel runs out. Your life is the entire reel of film, already developed, thrown onto a table.
Einstein sentenced it with a phrase he wrote to console the family of his deceased friend, Michele Besso, but which in reality was a declaration of war against common sense:
“For us believing physicists, the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.”
Read that again. He didn't say it was "relative". He said it was an ILLUSION.
In the real universe —the one that works out there, independent of your brain— there is no arrow that says "you are here". The coordinates of time (t) are as real and tangible as the coordinates of space (x, y, z).
Think of it this way: New York exists right now, even though you are in Madrid. You don't need to see it to know that its streets are there. You don't say "New York hasn't been created yet" just because you haven't arrived. Simply put, you are at a different spatial coordinate.
Well, with time exactly the same thing happens. The year 2040 is not an imaginary place that "will be built" tomorrow. The year 2040 is a coordinate in the space-time fabric that already exists, as solid and real as New York. The fact that your consciousness is not there yet does not mean that the territory is not paved, lit, and inhabited.
We call this structure "The Block Universe" (or Eternalism). And it is the concept that turns your anxiety about the future into a bad joke. Because if the stage is already set and the actors are already on their marks... what are you afraid of?
But I know what you are thinking. "If everything already exists, why do I feel like I'm moving forward?". To answer that, we have to take out the knife and cut the universe in half. Get ready for the loaf of bread.
1.2. LOAF OF BREAD METAPHOR: KNIFE THAT CUTS THE UNIVERSE
To understand why your intuition lies to you, we need a new image. Forget the river. Forget the hourglass.
I want you to visualize the entire Universe —the entire history of existence, from the explosion of the Big Bang to the last gasp of the last dead star within trillions of years— as a physical, solid, and static object. Imagine an immense, gigantic loaf of sliced bread.
This loaf of bread is not being "made" in the oven. It is already baked. It is complete on the table. In the crust at the left end is the origin of the cosmos; in the crust at the right end, the end of times. And in the middle, trapped in the crumb, are the dinosaurs, is Julius Caesar, are you reading this right now, and are your great-great-grandchildren being born in a century. Everything is there, frozen in the block, existing simultaneously.
So, what is the "time" that you feel passing?
Here enters the pedagogical genius that Nieves uses to explain Einstein. You, as an observer, are a cook with a knife. Your consciousness goes slicing that loaf of bread into very thin slices, one after another. Each slice you cut you call "NOW".
You believe that the only thing that exists is the slice you have in your hand. You believe that the crumb you have already eaten (the past) has disappeared and that the crumb remaining in the loaf (the future) is not yet real. But the loaf is still there, whole. The only thing moving is your knife.
Up to here, everything seems calm. But Einstein arrived and gave us the bad news: Your knife doesn't cut straight.
In our daily life, since we all move more or less at the same speed (very slowly) and are in the same place (Earth), we all cut the bread more or less the same. That is why we agree on what "now" is. But Relativity taught us that the angle at which you cut the bread depends on your SPEED.
If you stay still, your knife comes down perpendicular. But if you move, if you change your speed relative to another observer, your knife tilts. You cut the bread diagonally.
"And what does that matter?", you will ask. "If I move a little, the angle changes a millionth of a degree. It's not noticeable".
You are right. Here on Earth it is not noticeable. But the universe is big. And this is where the ANDROMEDA PARADOX comes in, the thought experiment that makes physicists wake up sweating at night.
I want you to imagine an alien living in the Andromeda Galaxy, which is about 2.5 million light-years from us. Imagine that this being has a magic telescope capable of seeing Earth instantly (it's a thought experiment, allow me the license).
If the alien is sitting still on his sofa in Andromeda, his "knife" cuts the bread straight, just like yours. His "Now" and your "Now" are the same. He sees you reading this post.
But, pay attention. Imagine that the alien gets up from the sofa and starts walking away from Earth. Just walking. At a slow pace.
That tiny movement, due to the monstrous distance that separates us, causes the angle of his knife to tilt slightly. But in a loaf of bread 2.5 million light-years long, a microscopic tilt at the origin becomes a gigantic deviation at the destination.
By walking away from you, his cut of "Now" slides towards Earth's past. Suddenly, for him, the "now" on Earth is not you reading. His diagonal cut has traversed the crumb backwards and what is simultaneous for him is your grandfather being born. You have ceased to exist in his present.
Now the alien turns around and starts walking towards Earth.
The angle of the knife tilts to the other side. The cut projects forward. Suddenly, in his "Now", his reality is simultaneous with Earth in 150 years.
And here comes the blow of reality, the conclusion that chills your blood:
If that alien, simply walking through his living room in Andromeda, can have a "Now" that mathematically coincides with the Earth of the year 2150... that means that the Earth of the year 2150 already has to be there to be cut.
It cannot intersect with nothingness. For his present to cut your future, your future has to be as solid, as real, and as tangible as your past.
If the future did not exist, the alien's movement could not connect with it. But physics says it connects. Therefore, the future is not a blank canvas where you are going to write your destiny. The future is the rest of the loaf of bread that waits, silent and dark, for your consciousness to arrive there with its knife.
Your death, your successes, your failures, and the end of this civilization are not "possibilities". They are geography. They are a place on the map of the block to which you have not yet traveled, but which has already been built, furnished, and inhabited.
Einstein's "Loaf of Bread" screams a truth at us that the human ego hates to admit: The script is already printed.
1.3. ARK APPLICATION: END OF ANXIETY (STOP WRITING SCRIPT ALREADY PRINTED)
Do you feel that? That knot in your stomach when you think about next year. That subtle tachycardia when checking your bank account or reading the news about war, AI, or climate collapse.
We call that "anxiety". Psychologists will tell you it is fear of uncertainty. They will tell you that your brain is trying to predict dangers that do not yet exist to protect you. But based on what we just dissected with the scalpel of Einstein and Nieves, anxiety is not an emotional pathology.
Anxiety is a physical calculation error.
You suffer because you believe that the future is a blank abyss. You suffer because you have been educated in the arrogant idea that you are the absolute "Architect" of your destiny, and that if you stop pedaling, if you stop worrying, if you stop controlling every variable, the future will collapse or go wrong. You believe that the script of your life is being written in real time, with fresh ink, and that a smudge now ruins the ending.
But the Loaf of Bread tells you the opposite.
If physics is right —and remember, the GPS on your mobile works thanks to the equations that say that physics is right—, the year 2030 is not a "possibility". The year 2030 is a TERRITORY.
Imagine that you are driving at night towards a city you do not know. You don't see the houses, you don't see the streets, you only see what your headlights illuminate in the next fifty meters. Do you have a panic attack thinking the city doesn't exist? Do you cry over the steering wheel thinking you have to "create" the buildings with your mind before arriving?
No. You drive calmly. You know the city is there, waiting in the darkness. You know the road is already paved. Your job is not to pave it; your job is to drive.
This is the attitude of the ARK Operator.
When you understand the Block Universe, anxiety evaporates and gives way to something much more powerful: CURIOSITY.
You stop being a neurotic writer biting your nails in front of a blank page and become a Method Actor who has received the best role of his life. The script is already printed in the space-time block. The end of the movie is already filmed.
This does not mean that you sit on the sofa waiting for death (that is nihilism). It means that you get up every morning with the absolute certainty that whatever has to happen, already exists. Your mission is not to force the result; your mission is to execute your role with fierce dignity.
· If in the block of bread it is written that your project triumphs, it will triumph. Not because of your stress, but because of your aligned action.
· If in the block it is written that a crisis is coming, the crisis is already there. Your worry does not avoid it, it only weakens you to face it.
This is Sovereignty over Destiny.
The slave lives terrified by what "could happen". The free man walks upright towards what "is going to happen", knowing that whatever it is, it is just another coordinate on the map.
Stop trying to hold the universe on your shoulders. The universe is already held. The bread is already baked. Let go of the steering wheel of control and grab the steering wheel of ATTENTION. Because if the landscape is already there, the only thing you have left, the only thing that is truly yours, is the quality with which you decide to look at the journey.
BLOCK II: THE ARROW OF TIME (THE ENTROPY DECEPTION)
2.1. THE MYSTERY OF REVERSIBILITY: THE BLIND LAWS
If you have recovered from the vertigo of the "Loaf of Bread," get ready, because now we are going to go down to the basement of reality. We are going to look under the hood of the universe to see the engine that moves time.
And what we are going to find is... nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
This is perhaps the most disturbing revelation that José Manuel Nieves throws in our face with the tranquility of someone asking for the bill: At a fundamental level, time has no direction.
Think about it for a second. You feel that life has a clear arrow. You are born, you grow, you age, and you die. The coffee gets cold. The wood turns to ash. Never the other way around. That "arrow of time" is the most basic experience of your existence. It is what makes you feel nostalgia for the past and fear for the future.
But if you ask the fundamental laws of physics —Newton's equations that move the planets, Maxwell's that light up your bulb, or Schrödinger's that govern your atoms— all of them will tell you the same thing: "Past? Future? I don't know what you are talking about".
All the great equations of physics are TIME SYMMETRIC. They work just as well forward as backward.
To understand this, imagine that you record a video of two billiard balls colliding on green felt. A white ball hits a red one. The red one shoots off and the white one stops. Now, rewind the video. You see the red ball hit the white one, which shoots off backwards.
If you show those two videos to a physicist and ask him: "Which is the real one and which is the faked one?", he won't be able to answer you.
Physically, both movements are perfectly legal. They do not violate any law. Energy is conserved. Momentum is conserved. For an atom, "going towards the future" and "going towards the past" is as irrelevant as for you turning left or right. They are just directions on the map.
So, we have a monumental problem. A "glitch" in the Matrix of cosmic proportions.
If the fundamental bricks you are made of (your atoms) do not distinguish yesterday from tomorrow... why do you?
Why do you remember your first kiss but don't remember your death? Why do plates break but never fix themselves? Who or what is imposing an obligatory direction on your life if physics says there shouldn't be any?
The answer has a technical name that sounds boring, but is responsible for every wrinkle on your face and every crisis in your life: ENTROPY.
And to explain to you what Entropy really is (without you falling asleep), we are going to have to break a cup of coffee.
2.2. BROKEN CUP METAPHOR: THE TYRANNY OF PROBABILITY
Imagine you are in your kitchen, any Tuesday morning. You are sleepy. Your hands are clumsy. Suddenly, your elbow knocks over your favorite coffee cup, the one you bought on a trip and that has sentimental value.
You see it fall in slow motion. It crashes against the floor. CRASH.
There it is: a chaos of white ceramic scattered across the tiles, mixed with puddles of hot coffee. You feel that pang of rage and resignation. You know, with absolute certainty, that there is no turning back. You cannot "un-break" the cup.
But why?
If we just said that the fundamental laws of physics are reversible, if the atoms of that ceramic have no objection to moving backwards... why has no one ever, in the entire history of humanity, seen the fragments of a cup vibrate, jump off the floor, join in the air sealing their cracks, absorb the spilled coffee, and land gently, whole and steaming, on the table?
The answer that science gives us is insulting in its simplicity.
It doesn't happen because it is impossible. Newton's laws allow it to happen. It doesn't happen because it is magic. It doesn't happen, simply, because it is IMPROBABLE.
Here enters the scene one of the most tragic and brilliant characters in the history of science: Ludwig Boltzmann. A man who understood time better than anyone and who ended up committing suicide, partly because the academic world of his time refused to accept his terrifying vision of reality.
Boltzmann taught us that the universe does not hate us. The universe does not conspire to break your cup. The universe, quite simply, is a blind casino player who won't stop shuffling the cards.
To understand it, let's look at your broken cup from Boltzmann's perspective:
· The Whole Cup (Order): For the cup to be whole, each of its trillions of atoms has to be in an exact, millimetric position, stuck to its neighbor in a very concrete way. There is only ONE way (or very few) for those atoms to form a "cup". It is a configuration of Low Probability.
· The Broken Cup (Disorder): However, there are TRILLIONS OF TRILLIONS of ways those atoms can be scattered across the floor and still be "cup fragments". They can be here or there, further or closer. All those configurations correspond to the "Broken" state. It is a configuration of High Probability.
The universe moves constantly. Atoms vibrate, collide, and change position. The universe is shuffling the deck of existence at every instant.
If you have a deck of cards ordered by suits and numbers and you throw it into the air, what is the probability that it falls to the ground perfectly ordered again? Practically zero. Not because it is impossible, but because there are millions of ways to fall disordered and only one to fall ordered.
That is what we call ENTROPY.
Entropy is not a malignant force that destroys things. Entropy is simply the crushing statistics of the universe moving blindly towards the most probable.
· Your cup breaks because there are more ways to be broken than to be whole.
· Your room gets messy on its own because there are more ways to be messy than to be tidy.
· You age because there are infinite ways for your cells to fail and very few for them to remain perfect.
And here we arrive at the most surgical definition of Time you will ever read:
Time is not an energy that flows. Time is the name we give to the increase of disorder.
We perceive that time "advances" simply because we are watching the movie of the universe go from the improbable (order) to the probable (chaos). If the universe had started in a state of total chaos, time would not exist for us.
So, when you look at the wrinkles in the mirror or the broken cup on the floor, you are not seeing the damage of time. You are seeing Boltzmann whispering to you from the grave: "It's not personal. It's just statistics."
BLOCK III: THE THERMAL ILLUSION (HEAT IS THE CULPRIT)
3.1. THE BATHTUB METAPHOR: CHRONICLE OF A TEPID DEATH
If you have reached this point without your head exploding, it is because you are starting to intuit the magic trick. We have seen that the universe is a solid block (Relativity) and that disorder is statistically inevitable (Entropy). But we are still missing the key piece. We are missing the "engine". We are missing knowing what pushes entropy to move.
What makes you feel the "flow"?
The answer is so everyday that it goes unnoticed: HEAT.
For modern physics —and here we lean on the brilliant Thermal Time Hypothesis of Carlo Rovelli—, time is not a fundamental variable of the universe. Time is an emergent phenomenon. It arises from something. And that "something" is thermodynamics. Put plainly: we only distinguish the past from the future because there is heat dissipating.
To visualize this with a clarity that hurts, we are going to use a powerful mental image. Forget quartz watches and calendars. Imagine a bathtub.
SCENARIO 1: THE PAST (ORDER AND STRUCTURE)
Imagine a large, white bathtub made of antique porcelain. But this bathtub has a particularity: it is divided exactly in half by a watertight partition, a wall of armored glass that separates the left side from the right.
· On the LEFT side, we fill the bathtub with boiling water. One hundred degrees. Bubbles. Steam rising. There is brutal kinetic energy in there.
· On the RIGHT side, we fill the bathtub with ice-cold, almost frozen water. Blocks of ice floating. Molecular silence.
Look at it closely. This is what in physics we call a state of LOW ENTROPY. Why? Because there is extreme ORDER. There is a clear difference. There is information. If I blindfold you and tell you "put your hand to the left", you know exactly what you are going to feel. There is a defined structure: heat here, cold there.
In this state, the universe of the bathtub is "charged". It has potential. It has history ahead of it. This is what we call "The Past" (or the beginning of the universe).
THE EVENT: THE BIRTH OF TIME
Now, imagine that you grab the glass partition and, with a dry yank, you rip it out. The barrier disappears. You have just created the Big Bang of that micro-universe.
SCENARIO 2: THE PRESENT (TURBULENCE AND FLOW)
What happens at the exact instant you remove the wall? Chaos is unleashed.
The boiling water does not stay still. It launches itself violently towards the ice water. Whirlpools, convection currents, temperature vortices are generated. Heat attacks cold; cold tries to temper heat. Fast molecules collide with slow ones.
If you put your hand in now, you would feel changing currents. You would feel movement. You would feel that "something is happening".
That is time.
What you call "the passage of time", that feeling that life moves, that events occur, that there is a narrative, is nothing more than the thermal turbulence of the universe trying to mix hot with cold. Your life, your loves, your crises, and your thoughts are, physically, those whirlpools of water mixing. We are children of imbalance. We only exist because the universe has not yet finished mixing its water.
SCENARIO 3: THE FUTURE (THE TEPID DEATH)
But wait. Let an hour pass. Go back to the bathroom and look at the bathtub.
The water no longer moves. There are no whirlpools. There is no steam on one side nor ice on the other. The entire bathtub is full of TEPID water. Grey. Uniform. If you put your hand to the left, it is tepid. If you put it to the right, it is tepid. There is no longer a difference. There is no longer information. There is no longer flow.
We have reached THERMAL EQUILIBRIUM. And here comes the final sentence of physics: In this state, time ceases to exist.
In a universe where everything is at the same temperature, you cannot distinguish past from future. Nothing changes. Nothing flows. It is the so-called "Heat Death" of the universe.
Therefore, the conclusion is devastating: You feel that time passes solely because you are in a universe that is still in the "mixing" phase. You are a sophisticated thermometer that detects how the universe loses its initial order.
Aging is not accumulating years. Aging is dissipating heat. You are the bathtub slowly becoming tepid. And the only reason you have memory of the past and not the future is because the past was "hot" (ordered) and the future is "tepid" (disordered). Heat is the ink with which history is written. Without heat, the page would be blank.
3.2. THE REVELATION: YOU ARE NOT A CLOCK, YOU ARE A BONFIRE
Now I want you to do something very simple. Stop reading for a second, raise your hand, and touch your neck. Or put your hand on your chest.
What do you feel? You feel heat. About 36.5 degrees Celsius, if everything is going well.
That heat is not a secondary detail of your biology. That heat IS your time.
Here is where the explanation of Nieves and the thesis of Carlo Rovelli become something personal, almost intimate. Physics tells us that our perception of temporal flow —that undeniable feeling that yesterday already happened and tomorrow is yet to come— depends exclusively on the dissipation of heat.
To understand the magnitude of this statement, let's imagine for a moment an impossible universe: a universe WITHOUT FRICTION.
Imagine a pendulum swinging in a perfect vacuum, with no air to slow it down, with a mechanism that never heats up. That pendulum would swing from left to right, eternally, without losing a single joule of energy. If you recorded that pendulum on video and showed it to me, I could not tell you if the video is playing forward or backward. The movement is identical. In that perfect and cold system, the past and the future are mechanically indistinguishable. Time, as we understand it, does not exist there.
But you do not live in that vacuum. You live in a world of friction.
When you brake your car, the brake pads heat up. That kinetic energy turns into heat and dissipates into the atmosphere. You will never see the heat from the atmosphere enter the wheels and push the car backwards. There, in that lost heat, is where the arrow of time is born. Time is the thermal footprint of things happening.
And the most terrifying thing: Your memory works the same way.
For your brain to register a memory —the taste of an apple, your mother's face, this text you are reading— your neurons have to burn glucose. They have to perform chemical and electrical work. They have to generate heat. You only remember the past because the past left a "thermal scar" on your structure. And you cannot remember the future because the future is still "cold"; there has been no interaction, no friction, no burning of energy.
Therefore, the final conclusion of this block should forever change the way you look in the mirror:
We have been taught that aging is a chronological issue. That time is an invisible wind that wears us down like the stone of a cathedral. It is a lie. Time does not touch you. Time has no hands.
What is killing you is not the calendar. What is killing you is OXYGEN.
Aging is, literally, oxidizing. It is a slow combustion. Every time you breathe, every time you eat, every time you think, you are burning fuel. You are generating entropy. You are increasing the disorder of the universe in exchange for maintaining your internal order a few moments longer.
You are a candle that is consumed. And what you call "life time" is nothing more than the amount of wick you have left to burn.
So, when you say "I'm running out of time", be more precise. Say: "I'm running out of heat". Say: "I'm cooling down". Because the end of the road, both for you and for the entire universe, is the same: thermal equilibrium. Absolute silence. The cold stillness where nothing happens because everything has already happened.
Time is, simply, the smoke your own existence gives off while it burns.
BLOCK IV: QUANTUM ORIGIN (BLINDNESS CREATES TIME)
4.1. THE EXTERNAL OBSERVER: THE EQUATION THAT MURDERED TIME
Until now we have played with "macroscopic" toys: loaves of bread, coffee cups, bathtubs with hot water. They are objects you can touch and understand. But Nieves warns us that to reach the final truth, we have to descend much deeper. We have to go down to the realm of Quantum Mechanics, where common sense is not only useless, but a hindrance.
And here, in the mathematical heart of reality, exists a thought experiment that has tormented physicists for decades. It is the so-called "Eye of God Perspective".
I want you to make a brutal effort of imagination. Imagine that you have the power to step out of the Universe. I'm not talking about going to another galaxy. I'm talking about stepping out of the "System" completely. Imagine that you float in absolute nothingness, outside of space and time, and you have in front of you the entirety of the cosmos encapsulated in a perfect glass sphere.
From that privileged position —the position of an absolute External Observer—, you look inside.
What do you see? Your intuition tells you that you would see a universe in frenetic motion: galaxies spinning, stars exploding, planets orbiting, people running. You would expect to see a cosmic action movie.
Well then. The most fundamental equations we have to describe quantum gravity (specifically the famous Wheeler-DeWitt Equation) predict something that will chill your blood:
You would not see anything moving. You would see a STATIC universe. Frozen. Eternal.
For that Divine Observer who sees it all at once, change does not exist. In the equations that describe the global quantum state of the universe, the variable "t" (time) DISAPPEARS. It cancels out. It vanishes. Mathematically, the universe as a whole does not evolve. It simply "IS".
This is what physicists call “The Problem of Time”. How is it possible that we, poor mortals, feel that time drags us along, while mathematics says that the universe is an immobile statue?
The answer has arrived recently (2024) in the form of a revolutionary paper from the National Research Council of Italy (Alessandro Coppo et al.), which Nieves explains with blinding clarity. And the answer is a slap to our ego:
Time is not a property of the universe. Time is a property of your myopia.
To understand it, let's go back to that External Observer. He sees everything. He knows the exact position and state of every particle, of every photon, of every electron. He has PERFECT INFORMATION. And by having perfect information, he does not need time. For him, everything is correlated with everything in an immense and still network.
But you are not God. You are INSIDE the sphere. And that is your problem.
By being inside, you cannot see everything. You are limited. You only see a ridiculous fragment of reality. Your brain cannot process the entirety of the quantum state. And that lack of information, that "not knowing" how all particles relate to each other, is what your mind interprets as "passage of time".
It is as if you were looking at a hyper-realistic painting of a waterfall. If you could see every static brushstroke, you would know it is dry paint. But if you look out of the corner of your eye, or with tired eyes, your brain fills in the gaps and invents the movement of the water.
Time, partner, is that invention. Time is the trick your consciousness uses to navigate a universe that is too complex to be understood in its entirety. You do not age because the universe changes. You age because you are not capable of seeing that, in reality, nothing has ever changed.
4.2. THE INTERNAL OBSERVER: THE PRISON OF BLURRY VISION
Here is where the story becomes personal. We have seen that a hypothetical "God" outside the universe would see an eternal crystal statue, without time. But you are not that God. You are not in the stands watching the game; you are in the mud, taking the kicks.
You are an Internal Observer.
And this is your existential drama: By being INSIDE the system, you are not neutral. You are made of the same atoms you are trying to measure. You breathe the same air. And, according to quantum mechanics, you are irretrievably ENTANGLED with everything that surrounds you.
What does this mean in practice? It means you are contaminated. You cannot see the entirety of the universe because you are part of the equation you are trying to solve. It is like trying to read the label on a jar while you are locked inside the jar.
This physical limitation has a devastating side effect that José Manuel Nieves explains with a lucidity that disarms: Your vision is imperfect.
Imagine that you are looking at a giant pointillist painting, one of those made with millions of tiny dots of colors. If you had super-vision and could see each individual dot with absolute sharpness, you would see reality exactly as it is: static dots. Red, blue, green. Still. There is no movement. There is no narrative. Only pure data.
But your brain does not have that processing capacity. Your brain cannot track the position of every atom in the universe. So it does the only thing it can do to not collapse: SUMMARIZE.
Squint your eyes. By losing detail, the static dots merge. The colors mix. And suddenly, where before there was still data, now you see shapes. You see a river that seems to flow. You see a sky that seems to move. You have created an illusion of continuity from your inability to see the detail.
That is Time.
Time is not an infrastructure that the cosmos built. Time is the result of your BLURRY VISION.
The phenomenon we call "passage of time" arises, exclusively, because we ignore the microscopic details of the system. It is a statistical effect. If you knew the exact position and velocity of every water molecule in a river, the concept of "flow" would disappear and you would only see geometry. But since you don't know it, since your vision is "blurry" and averaged, your brain invents the variable t (time) to explain the changes it cannot process individually.
The final sentence of this block should be tattooed on the mind of any seeker of truth:
Time is the measure of our ignorance.
We do not age because the universe punishes us. We age because we do not know enough. We age because our consciousness is a low-power lighthouse that only illuminates a piece of the map, leaving the rest in shadow. And that shadow, that not-knowing what comes next or what happened before at the quantum level, we call "Past" and "Future".
You are a prisoner of your own perception. Time is the bars of your lack of vision.
BLOCK V: NEUROSCIENCE (LIVING ON A DELAY)
5.1. THE PROCESSING WINDOW: THE LIE OF "LIVE"
We have traveled to the limits of the universe with Einstein, we have broken cups with Boltzmann and we have looked at tepid water with Rovelli. You might think that the problem of time is "out there", in the physics of the stars.
But the real horror, the final blow to your certainty of being alive "right now", happens much closer. It happens inside the dark and silent vault of your skull.
Modern neuroscience —led by researchers of the stature of David Eagleman— has confirmed a fact that should disturb you more than any black hole: You have never lived in the present.
Never. Not a single time in your life.
To understand this, you have to comprehend that your body is not a perfect fiber optic machine. It is a biological machine, wet and slow. When you snap your fingers in front of your eyes, you think you see and hear the snap at the exact instant it happens. Your brain sells you the illusion of perfect synchronicity, of an absolute "Real Time".
It is lying to you.
Let's analyze the chronometry of the event with the rigor of an engineer:
· The light from the snap hits your retina.
· The sound hits your eardrum (much slower than light).
· That physical energy has to be transformed into chemical and electrical signals (transduction).
· Those signals travel through nerves that, compared to the speed of light, are back roads full of potholes.
· Finally, they reach the visual and auditory cortex, where the brain has to process, clean the noise and, most importantly, SYNCHRONIZE the data.
How long does this whole neuronal bureaucratic process take? Studies say it takes an average of 80 to 100 milliseconds.
It may seem little, but in neurological terms, 100 milliseconds is an eternity. It is the difference between life and death on a highway.
What does your brain do during that dead time? It does the same thing television networks do when they broadcast the Super Bowl on "tape delay": IT DELAYS THE SIGNAL.
Your brain knows that light arrives before sound. If it showed you reality exactly as it enters, you would see the movement of the lips before hearing the voice, like in a badly dubbed movie. You would live desynchronized. So your brain, in an act of evolutionary genius (and massive deception), WAITS.
It retains the visual information. Waits for the auditory to arrive. Waits for the touch to arrive. It edits everything in the editing room of the thalamus and the cortex, stitches it together so it seems coherent, and then, with a delay of a tenth of a second, projects the "Reality" onto your screen of consciousness.
What you call "NOW" is, technically, a memory.
You are seeing a shooting star that has already burned out. You are listening to a sentence that has already been said. You are feeling a caress that already ended. You are a time traveler trapped perpetually in the immediate past. Your consciousness is always towing behind the facts.
Neuroscientist Anil Seth defines it with a phrase that chills the blood: “Reality is a controlled hallucination”. And in that hallucination, present time is the great special effect. The "Now" is not a window open to the world; it is a security monitor with latency.
So, when you feel anxiety because time "escapes you", remember the biological irony: You are not even capable of catching the instant you are in. Your own biology condemns you to live in the echo of what just happened.
The present is not a place where you live. It is a story your brain tells you about what happened a moment ago so you can survive.
BLOCK VI: OPERATIONAL CONCLUSION (SOVEREIGNTY)
6.1. THE SYNTHESIS: THE DOUBLE CAGE (YOU ARE A VOLUNTARY PRISONER)
The moment has come to lift your eyes from the microscope and look at the full panorama. If you have read this far without your hands shaking, it means you have a cast-iron stomach.
We have performed the most brutal autopsy possible on your daily reality. And what we have found on the operating table is not pleasant, but it is the only truth that will set you free.
We are facing a TWO-LEVEL CONSPIRACY. You are living inside a cage that is placed inside another cage. And to escape, you need to distinguish the bars of one from the other.
LEVEL 1: THE SOCIAL CAGE (THE LIE OF KRONOS)
· The Origin: Washington, 1884. The Industrial Revolution.
· The Mechanism: The mechanical clock, the 9 to 5 schedule, productivity, hurry, the guilt for "wasting time".
· The Nature: It is a POLITICAL IMPOSITION. It is an agreement between dead gentlemen to convert your organic life into units of economic production. They taught you to sell your time because they convinced you that time is a scarce resource that runs out. This cage is made of paper. It breaks by saying "NO".
LEVEL 2: THE COSMIC CAGE (THE PHYSICAL ILLUSION)
· The Origin: The Big Bang. Thermodynamics. Your own cerebral biology.
· The Mechanism: Entropy (everything breaks), Heat (everything cools down), and Quantum Blindness (you don't see the totality).
· The Nature: It is a COGNITIVE HALLUCINATION. You feel that time flows not because it flows, but because your brain is too slow to process the "Now" and too nearsighted to see the "Eternal Block". You suffer for the future because you do not understand that the future is a territory that already exists. This cage is made of mist. It dissolves by saying "I KNOW".
THE COLLAPSE OF THE SCAM
When you connect these two points, reality explodes.
You realize that you have spent your whole life running after a ghost (the Future) fleeing from another ghost (the Past), while looking at a clock invented by a bureaucrat (Kronos) that measures something that physically does not exist (Time).
It is the ultimate cosmic joke.
· The system tells you: "Run, you don't have time!"
· Physics tells you: "Relax, time does not exist and the script is already written".
Do you understand the magnitude of the tragedy now? Modern society has hacked your biological blindness (your inability to see the eternal now) to sell you productive anxiety.
They have taken advantage of the fact that you cannot see the whole "Loaf of Bread" to sell you the idea that if you don't run, you will be left without a slice. They have monetized your quantum ignorance.
But now you know the trick. You know that the watch on your wrist does not measure time; it measures your entropy. You know that anxiety about tomorrow is fear of a place that is already built.
The synthesis is this: You do not lack time. You have too much blindness. And you cannot recover time (because it was never yours), but you can recover your SIGHT.
6.2. ARK STRATEGY: THE ART OF WALKING UPRIGHT INTO THE FIRE
And now what? Now that you know that the future is a solid territory that already exists in the block. Now that you know that your aging is just your heat dissipating into the void. Now that you know that your "now" is a delayed neuronal hallucination.
What do you do tomorrow morning when the alarm goes off?
The easy answer would be nihilism: "If everything is written and time is a lie, nothing matters. I'll lie down and wait for heat death". But that is the answer of the coward. And at ARK we do not train cowards. We train Operators.
The correct answer, the ARK Strategy, is radically opposite. Knowing that the script is already printed does not take away responsibility; it gives you ultimate freedom. It liberates you from fear.
If the year 2030 is already there, waiting in the darkness of the space-time block, then your anxiety to "avoid" bad things happening is as ridiculous as screaming at a horror movie so the protagonist doesn't open the door. The movie is already filmed. The door is going to open.
Your only mission, your only SOVEREIGNTY, is not to change the footage. It is to play your role with a dignity that makes the stars tremble.
1. ATTENTION IS YOUR ONLY WEAPON If time is the result of our "blurry vision" (our ignorance), the only way to escape the tyranny of time is to SHARPEN YOUR SIGHT. Stop managing your schedule and start managing your ATTENTION. When you are totally present, when you put 100% of your consciousness into the act of drinking a glass of water or looking your child in the eyes, you are reducing local entropy. You are stepping out of the neuronal "delay". You are grazing eternity. Psychological time stops when attention is absolute.
2. INTENTION IS YOUR ONLY MAP You cannot change the road (the Block Universe), but you can choose with what attitude you drive the car. You can go screaming, crying, and kicking because you are getting old (resistance, friction, more heat, more time). Or you can go calmly, observing the landscape, accepting the curves, knowing that the destination is assured. INTENTION is the quality with which you cut the slice of bread. The bread is what it is. But the cut... ah, my friend, the cut is yours. Make it a clean cut.
3. AMOR FATI (LOVE OF FATE) The Stoics knew it without the need for quantum physics, but Einstein gave them the mathematical reason. You have to love what happens, whatever it is, because it could not have happened any other way. Physically, this moment is the only moment possible given the initial conditions of the universe. Hating this moment is hating reality itself. Accepting it is aligning oneself with the cosmos.
THE FINAL CALL
Partner, we have dismantled the clock. We have seen the gears of the universe and we have discovered that they are empty.
But tomorrow you will return to the world. Tomorrow you will have to clock in, pay bills, and endure traffic jams. Tomorrow, the illusion will attack you again. Your brain will tell you again that "you don't have time". Society will demand haste from you again.
That is why we leave you here the two weapons you need to survive in the trench:
· FOR YOUR SPIRIT: Keep this report. Remember the Loaf of Bread. Remember that anxiety is a calculation error. Remember that you are eternal in the block.
· FOR YOUR DAY TO DAY: If you need tactical tools to defend yourself from the time thieves in the office, in the family, and in the productive system, read our previous report again: [KRONOS: THE REBELLION]. There we teach you to hack the social cage.
Here, today, we have just hacked the divine cage.
Time does not exist. But you do. And your turn on the stage has just begun.
Make the ticket worth it.
